The circumstances surrounding three Cambridge fires on Sunday night are under investigation by the office of the State Fire Marshal.
According to Cambridge deputy fire chief Daniel J. Reagan, Massachusetts law requires the Marshal's office to investigate three types of fires: those of suspicious origin, of undetermined cause, and those which involve a violation of law. Reagan estimated that last year the Fire Marshal looked into the circumstances of five to ten per cent of Boston's fires.
The most spectacular Sunday blaze under investigation was on top of the unfinished Phase II of Holyoke Center. William H. Eddy. job superintendent of the Phase II construction, said yesterday that the eighth floor of wooden scaffolding was destroyed by the fire, and repairs will involve "a day or two of extra work."
