Archibald Cox, Samuel Williston Professor of Law, has been named by Vice-President Humphrey to a five-man panel that will arbitrate the dispute between the Amateur Athletic Union and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Serving with Cox on the panel are David M. Shoup, former commandant of the Marine Corps, Thomas Vail, publisher and editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and Ralph Metcalfe, Chicago alderman and former Olympic medal winner. The panel's chairman is Theodore W. Kheel, who was the mediator in the recent New York newspaper strike. the NCAA.
The NCAA has been challenging the right of the AAU to represent the United States on various international sports federations.
Cox said yesterday that the two organizations would present their cases at the first formal meeting of the panel scheduled for Jan. 18.
He added that the representatives of both organizations who attended the Washington meeting where the panel was announced "manifested a cooperative attitude."
