Sextet Meets Polar Bears

Every time Coach Cooney Weiland's sophomore-stadded hockey squad takes the ice, the young skaters will get a little more experienced and perhaps a little less erratic. After uninspired performances against the Eastern Olympic Hockey Club and Colby, the stickmen try again tonight against Bowdoin College in Watson Rink at 8 p.m.

From the first face-off, the match should be a classic contrast between Bowdoin's experience and Harvard's youth. The Polar Bears from Brunswick will start six seniors tonight including wing Ed Fitzgerald, named to the UPI All-New England Small College Team last season.

Harvard, on the other hand, had only three seniors suit up for the 4-4 tie with Colby last Saturday. Weiland relies on sophomores like center Kent Parrot, who scored in both games. Parrot is flanked by senior Jorge Gonzales and junior Peta Waldinger.

For Bowdoin, this is the season's opener, and they will be getting their feet wet against a Crimson sextet that traditionally has had little trouble disposing of them. Last year's Harvard team was the worst here in eleven years, but the skaters still mangled Bowdoin, 4 to 1.

Ticket book coupon No. 2 must be exchanged for hockey tickets by 5 p.m. today at the H.A.A. office, 60 Boylston St.

The Polar Bears have 13 lettermen returning from last year's 10-10 team. Fitzgerald slapped 15 goals past New England netminders last season, and assisted on 15 others. Center Bill Allen had 11 goals and 8 assists last year. Barry Smith, with six goals and six assists, completes the starting line.

Goalie Dick Leger is the only Bowdoin starter without a great deal of varsity experience. As an understudy last acason, he stopped 204 shots in nine games and allowed 30 goals.
