Varsity Harriers Sure Bet Today Over Dartmouth

The varsity cross-country runners -- at least the ones who don't have anything better to do -- will maul Dartmouth in Hanover today.

Dartmouth people don't care much about the sport, so this meet is an annual rout. Coach Bill McCurdy often takes a skimpy squad on the long bus ride and lets the boys with classes stay here in Cambridge.

It doesn't really matter. Last year the Crimson took the first six places and won, 15-47. This time, Indian sophomore Steve Atwood could keep McCurdy's charges from racking up a perfect score, but that's about all.

Atwood beat Jim Baker across the finish line in last year's freshman meet (Bob Stempson didn't run in that one), but he has been slightly less impressive as a varsity performer. Behind Atwood the Indians have next to nothing.

Harvard appears to be in good shape for this one. Dave Allen has been great in his last few outings. The cold that kept Walt Hewlett from making the Cornell trip last week seems to have disappeared. Hewlett has looked strong in workouts in Waltham this week.

Stempson's leg is still bothering him some, but against the Indians, injuries short of broken limbs generally don't show up in the point totals.
