Clarkson Clobbers Six, But St. Lawrence Bows

Harvard beat St. Lawrence, 7-3 Friday for its first victory ever in the "north country" of upstate New York. But a hard-checking Clarkson defense shut out the Crimson for 50 minutes the next night and handed Harvard its seventh defeat of the season, 5-1.

The offense had its best night of the season against St. Lawrence, as Jose Gonzales turned in the season's first hat trick for Harvard.

The Larries' veteran goalie, Bob Perani, gave Harvard a hand, too. Although Perani did stop 26 shots, it just wasn't his day.

John Daly's first-period slap shot bounced out of Perani's hand and into the net to open the scoring at 14:05. Gonzales got his first two goals later in the period, both with quick shots on passes from McCullough.

St. Lawrence closed to 3-2 and shut out the Crimson in the second period. But Gordie Price beat Perani from just in front of the cage at 5:20 of the third period; McCullough added two goals within three minutes, and Gonzales finished the scoring by completing his hat trick with 30 seconds to go.

The Knights opened the scoring at 4:03 of the first period as center Brian Rowley tapped in a rebound. Goals by Gary MacDonald and Jack Morrill made it 3-0.

Harvard held the Knights through the second period, but it took just a few seconds for Roy Atkinson to score in the final stanza. Gary Patterson made it 5-0 before Gonzales spoiled Yurkiewicz' shut-out at 10:23.
