Two Crews Challenge Crimson in Adams Cup

The Crimson heavyweight crew will seek its third straight win of the season Saturday on the Charies against Navy and Penn for the Adams Cup in a final test before the Eastern sprint Championships at Worcester next week. The varsity race, to be run at 6 p.m., will be over 2000 meters.

In the Goldthwait Cup at Yale, Harvard's lightweights face the Elis and Princeton. Coach Fred Cabot's lightweights too will be looking toward the Sprints, and barring a bad case of over-confidence, will be favored to keep the Cup.

The heavyweight crews of both Navy, which was the U.S. Olympic representative in 1940, and Penn will be entering the Adams Cup with losing seasons thus far. Princeton, whose string of victories was broken by the Crimson last week, has defeated both crews.

But the Tiger victories came early in the season and over longer distances than the 2000 meter sprint, and anything can happen. In its first race last week, Cornell, the Sprint favorite, defeated Navy by nearly four lengths over 2000 meters and the results of the race here Saturday will give coach Harry Parker an idea of what to expect at Worcester.

Cornell's crews will face Yale, another leading heavyweight contender, this week. The winner will very likely be the crew to beat at the Sprints and Harvard will definitely be one of the challengers if it can win the Adams Cup Saturday.

The varsity lightweight crew rowed a time trial Wednesday "significantly faster" than its time in the victory over Navy last week, said Cabot. Neither Yale nor Princeton has impressive records to date and Cabot hopes to make it two straight wins Saturday.

Parker will send to the Adams Cup the same varsity combination that has won for the last two weeks. It includes Bob Schwarz at bow, Goeff Gratwick at two, captain Harry Pollock at three, Tom Pollock at four, Jim Tew at five, Paul Gunderson at six, Bob Whitney at seven, Geoff Picard at stroke, and Ted Washburn at cox.

In the lightweight boat will be Martyn Greenacre at bow, Leo Cass at two, Bruce Stephenson, who rowed JV last week, at three, Allan Tice at four, Charles McClennan at five, captain Jim MacMahon at six, Roman Nowygrod at seven, Galen Brewster at stroke, and Paul Henry at cox.
