Crimson Runners Take Five Events, Coast to Greater Boston Track Title

The Boston press has been talking all week about the superb balance of the Northeastern track team, but the Crimson runners taught the Huskies a step or two at Brandeis yesterday, waltzing to a 122-61 victory in the third annual Greater Boston Conference Track and Field Meet.

Highlighting Harvard's performance was a 1:51.6 half-mile by John Ogden and sweeps of both hurdle events. Ogden's time over the rubberized asphalt track was just fast enough to beat Ed Gastonguay of Brandeis, the defending champion in the event, and was only 0.2 seconds off the Harvard record.

In the 120-yard high hurdles, it was Aggrey Awori leading the Crimson sweep, finishing ahead of Tony Lynch and Jack Spitzberg in 0:14.8. Lynch task the 446-yard intermediate hurdles in a fast 0:52.3 with Spitzberg in the runner-up position.

Other Crimson, first places came in the two-mile, won by sophomore Walt Hewlett in 9:23.6 and in the mile relay as Joe Smith, Keith Chiappa Lynch, and Ogden registered a 3:19.9 electing.

The Crimson posted second places in the mile run and the 100-yard dash. Captain Ed Meeban ran the first three fourths of his race in a speedy 3:07 but couldn't shake Phil Jutras, Boston College's premier middle distance man. Jurtas passed him in the final eighth of a mile and finished in 4:09.2, a new meet record.

All My Trials...

Awori took second in the 100-yard dash behind Northeastern's Ed McGlaston, whose time for the sprint was 0:10. In the 220-yard dash. Awori showed the effect of too many afternoon trials, finishing sixth in the six-man championship beat. Northeastern's Ed Flowers won the race in 0:21.3.

The only other event in the two-day meet in which the Crimson failed to score was the 440-yard run. B.C.'s Bob Gilvey copped first place in 43.6 to earn the victory over Ed Tantorski of Boston University.
