Crimson Crews Sweep; Varsity Breaks Record

Harvard's big, smooth varsity heavyweight crew dispelled any doubts about its performance over the short 2000-meter course Saturday as it crushed previously unbeaten Princeton by two and a half lengths in the Compton Cup on the Charles.

Coach Harry Parker's stunning victory capped an afternoon full of Crimson wins. Forgetting last week's losses to M.I.T., the lightweights swept Navy in the in the Haines Cup. Only the third heavyweight boat lost in what was nearly a perfect day for Harvard oarsmen.

Helped by a substantial tailwind, the varsity heavies never gave Princeton a chance ends set a course record with their time of 6:00.5. Had the river not been so choppy at the finish, they might have had even a faster time.

Stroke Geoff Picard had hoped to stay even with the Tigers at the start and pull ahead, if possible, in the latter half of the race. But Princeton fell behind from the very beginning, and M.I.T., despite its very high stroke, was never in the race and finished five lengths behind the Crimson.

Coach Fred Cabot's varsity lightweight victory over Navy was no less impressive. Stroke Galen Brewster's crew got off to a fast start and managed to win by nearly four lengths while rowing the body of the race at a 32-33 beat, relatively low for 2000 meters.

In a race at Cornell Saturday, the Big Red's varsity lightweights edged two feet ahead of M.I.T., who defeated the Crimson last week by only three feet.

If the varsity heavyweights can win the Adams Cup against Navy and Penn next Saturday, they should stand a good chance in the Sprints a week later. In a big showdown next week, Cornell, last year's Sprint champions, faces undefeated Yale, and the winner there will probably be the crew to beat at Worcester.
