The lacrosse team has elected Frederick L. Gates '65, of Leverett House and Ruxton, Md., as captain for next season.
After an outstanding sophomore year, Gates developed into one of the Ivy League's top defensemen with this season's club, which tied Princeton for the League championship.
He was an all-New England prep school selection as a senior at Exeter and quickly became one of the Crimson varsity's most valuable men. He was out of the lineup and on crutches when the team bowed to Yale, 9-6, in a game that cost Harvard the Ivy title.
He will captain a team that will lose one standout attackman, Lou Williams, four midfielders including Captain Peter Wood and All-American candidate Tink Gunnoe, plus defenseman Charley Kessler, from this year's squad. The Crimson posted a final record of 11-3, and was 4-2 in Ivy play. Only an opening-game loss to Rutgers, a one-point defeat at the hands of Princeton, and the loss to Yale marred the record.
