Hockey Team Fights for Ivy League Lead In Return Contest With Cornell Tonight

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harvard's varsity hockey team has a chance to tie for the Ivy League lead tonight when it meets Cornell at Watson Rink. If the Crimson can rebound from its Monday night loss to B.U., the team can join Dartmouth at the top of the standings.

The Big Red is not unknown to the Crimson, who edged Cornell 4-3 last month. Cornell senior Jerry Kostandoff, who is leading the team in scoring for the third consecutive year, has already accounted for 19 points, and the whole first line of Kostandoff, sophomore center Murray Stephen, and veteran wing Jim Stevens has a 54 point total. Their output tops Harvard's Kinasewich-Fryer-Iksuniks line by 9 points. Cornell's goalie Earl McGibbon, with a GA percentage of 2.6, has been nearly as effective as Crimson star Brandy Sweitzer, who sports a 2.3 average.

Since the last Harvard-Cornell meeting, the Big Red has lost two of three games, both by one goal-- o Princeton 1-0 and to Colgate 3-2. They defeated Hamilton 4-0. The Crimson, in the meantime, beat league-leading Dartmouth 4-3 and skewered the St. Nicholas hockey club 7-1 before losing to B.U. Monday night.

A further look at season records gives Harvard the definite advantage. Cornell is 3-7 while Harvard's record stands at 11-3. The Big Red have padded their record with victories over such dubious opponents as Watertoo, Hamilton, and American International, while they were pulverised by two of their more powerful opponents, Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Harvard has beaten such strong teams as St. Lawrence, Toronto, Minnesota, B.C., and B.U., and Dartmouth. And they have already beaten Cornell once.

Coupons for the game must be exchanged for tickets before five o'clock today at 60 Boylston St.
