The fire department responded gallantly at 4 a.m. yesterday morning to an alarm sent out from Matthews S. Eight trucks arrived within 5 minutes to douse a burning couch.
A cigarette accidentally left on the couch started the fire after Peter Johnson '68 and Bob Easton '68 went out to get something to eat, Johnson said. They woke the third roommate, Joseph Cantrick '68, and called the fire department when they returned and found the couch burning.
Johnson said it "wasn't much of a fire--just a lot of smoke." The couch is now at the city dump, because it "smelled too badly," he said.
A copy of Ian Fleming's Goldfinger was also burned.
