Navy Finally Locates Sunken Sub; Aqua-Pictures Conclude Search

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

NORFOLK, Va. May 30--The Navy announced tonight it has definitely found the sunken submarine Thresher.

Vice Adm. Elton W. Grenfell, commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet submarine force, revealed that photographs taken earlier in the day 220 miles east of Boston "appeared to be definitely correlated with the missing submarine."

The nuclear sub went down April 10 during a test dive with 129 men aboard 220 miles off Boston.

Concentrating her search in a 700 by 200-yard area of prime interest, the Lamont Laboratory research vessel Conrad obtained photographs of the Thresher with her underwater camera system.

Rome Rests as Pope Rallies

VATICAN CITY May 30--Doctors relaxed their vigil over Pope John XXIII today and said his hemorrhages had halted. They warned him to stay in bed, but he didn't.

Less than 48 hours after a crisis that brought him near death the Pope, 81, was showing what one of his doctors called "a constitution of iron joined with his will of iron."

An air of optimism dispelled the tension that had hung over the Vatican, and prelates talked hopefully of the Pope plunging anew into his work.

Memphis Speeds Integration

MEMPHIS, Tenn. May 30--City officials, acting under a court order, agreed today to desegregate all recreational facilities here but said operation of public swimming and wading pools would be suspended for the time being.

The decision came at a meeting of the City Commission, city attorneys and members of the Park Commission. It was called by Mayor Henry Loeb after the U.S. Supreme Count struck down Monday the city's 10-year plan for gradual desegregation of public parks, playgrounds and other such facilities.

The city had already desegregated numerous facilities before the recent court order.
