HARVARD LOSES HAVELOCK TO YALE CLASSICS DEPT.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Eric A. Havelock, professor of Greek and Latin, has been appointed Sterling Professor of Classics at Yale, where he will head the Classics Department next year.

A member of the department said he hoped Yale might challenge Harvard's present supremacy in the classics. But Havelock yesterday preferred to speak of "creating a closer bond between the two institutions."

He will encourage exchanges of both lecturers and students.

Havelock expects to increase the emphasis on undergraduate work in the classics at Yale. He said that "at Harvard, the emphasis is evenly distributed between undergraduate and graduate study, and that is the way I think it should be."
