BEKASIH, Ball, March 22--A vast moonscape of death stretches around this northeast Ball village in the shadow of Agung Volcano, whose fury has killed more than 1,200 people since Sunday.

Not a touch of green remains here, five miles from the top of the 10,308-foot mountain which the Balinese believe is the seat of the gods. Trees are stripped of their leaves. Branches are caked white with volcanic dust. The lovely terrace rice paddles lie under a smooth gray surface of brimstone.

The official death toll stands at 1,264. The Ball government reports 64 people injured and numbers 75,000 as refugees. The number of missing has not been determined.
