The new rent adjustment fund will be handled by the Financial Aid Office after all. Fred L. Glimp '50, dean of Admissions and Financial Aids, said yesterday the Financial Aid Office agreed to administer the fund after several Masters complained that judging the eligibility of applicants for rent adjustments "would turn them into policemen."
The new fund will consist of $40,000, Glimp said, and will be used to help needy students denied scholarships, students on probation who have lost scholarships, and students whose families do not contribute sufficiently to their support. The old rent adjustment fund, which was handled by the Masters, was used simply to permit students of different economic backgrounds to room together.
"The rent adjustment fund will put some flexibility back for students admitted but denied aid, and for others trying to skimp on costs," Glimp explained.
Not included in the new fund is $30,000 which the College must make available to current scholarship holders whose rents will increase when the single room rent of $510 per year goes into effect next fall. Glimp said this money will be included in the scholarship budget next year.
He stated that the College intends to cover all rent increases incurred by scholarship students, but said the main concern was for students whose rents will jump significantly under the new rate. Scholarship increases will meet all rent hikes of over $50, Glimp said. In cases where the increase is small--$10 to $20--increases in scholarship aid may not be forthcoming.
Non-scholarship students seeking rent adjustment under the new fund will have to file applications with the Financial Aid office, Glimp explained, but they will not have to demonstrate poverty. He said no lengthy financial statement would be included in the application.
