Police Puncture Dawn Band Raid In Poughkeepsie

A sleepy gas station owner and legal police foiled the band's early morning raid on Vassar College Saturday morning.

En route to Pennsylvania, the band had stopped at the station to transfer their instruments from the truck to the buses for a quick reveille at the nearby women's college. Sixty men appearing on your front lawn at 3 a.m. is an unsettling sight, and the groggy owner promptly called Poughkeepsie police.

When two police cars pulled up to the gas station-residence several minutes later, the officers asked the band to leave, but did not seam to guess their mischievous intent, reported Edward H. Flitton III '64, manager of the band.

After turning back to the Vassar campus, however, the caravan bumped into a police car which "was either waiting or just happened to be there," Flitton said. Various members of the group attempted to explain that they only intended to stay "ten, minutes for a little harmless fun."

"You won't be here in ten minutes," the boys were informed by the officers, who Flitton reported "much more obstinate than those at Yale." When names were asked and summons threatened, the dissatisfied musicmakers hopped back in the busses and took off for an equally frustrating encounter at Penn.
