An almost perfect Kirkland defense, combined with methodical offensive drives, let the Deacons down a previously unbeaten Leverett House football team 18-0 in Monday's game. The win created a virtual five-way tie for first place in the House gridiron standings.
In the opening minutes the Kirkland eleven recovered the Bunnies' kickoff fumble, and Bill Berman capped a 35-yard drive by scoring the first touchdown.
Kirkland kicked off again and held Leverett for four downs, recovering the punt on their own 30-yard line. The Bunnies scarcely had time to set their defense before Chuck Stuckey took the ball for Kirkland and scampered 70 yards to make it 12-0 before the whistle blew ending the quarter.
Leverett Tired
The Leverett team, playing its fourth game in eight days, had trouble getting its defense rolling throughout the game, but managed to hold Kirkland to midfield for the second and third quarters.
Deacon play began to click again in the fourth quarters a 65-yard drive culminated in a touchdown pass from Berman to Howie Schecter for the final score. Kirkland's straight 5-4 defense, headed by Lenny Merski, Kenny Wells and Mark Weinstein, conceded but two first downs to Leverett's offense, which never penetrated the opposition's 35-yard line.
The defeat displaced Leverett from its first spot in the House standings, which it gained last Thursday by triumphing over Eliot 14-0. Adams, Dunster, Kirkland, Eliot and Leverett all now hold 3-1 records.
