Paced by the record-breaking performances of Aggrey Awori and Ed Meehan, the Crimson trackmen romped to a 69-40 victory over a weaker than expected Brown team in Briggs Cage Saturday. It was the fourth win in as many appearances for Coach Bill McCurdy's sophomore studded squad and marked their last appearance until after exams.
Awori, a member of Uganda's 1960 Olympic team, established a new University and cage record of: 05.1 in leading a Crimson sweep of the 40 yard high hurdles. Observers claimed that it was impossible to see daylight between Awori and Hank Hatch, although officials clocked Hatch in: 05.2
The sophomore star, having already tied three University records as a freshman, has yet to be beaten in varsity sprint or hurdle competition. His string was not broken Saturday as he edged out Brown's Richard Bennet in the 40 yard dash.
In the mile relay, the meet's most ex-McAfee repeated his earlier come-from-behind victory over Mike Henderson in citing race, sophomore anchor man Gage the 600 yard run. Timing his move perfectly, McAfee passed Henderson at the final turn and won by a step in 3:32.1.
McCurdy used his first string distance runners sparingly. Ed Meehan and Bill Crain each ran only once, while captain Ed Hamlin, still bothered by a foot injury, did not compete at all.
Meehan trailed Jack Farley for over seven of the 10 2/3 laps that comprise a mile in Briggs Cage before he pulled away and, running easily, broke the tape almost fifty yards ahead. The time, although disputed, was officially reported at 4:12--a new cage record. Crain had little trouble in winning the two mile in 9:36.1
Crimson supremacy in weight events was blemished only by Brown's second shot-put. Art Croasdale won that event and placed second behind Art Doten in the 35 lb. weight throw.
Chris Pardee and Walter Hewlett both gained double victories as the freshmen won 76-33. Particularly impressive was Art Morrisson, whose time of :04.7 in the 40 yd. dash equalled the winning varsity time.
