President Bunting stated yesterday that the granting of "Harvard" diplomas to Radcliffe students meant that "Radcliffe girls can now properly say that they go to Harvard, and that Radcliffe is now a unit within Harvard University."
At the same time, though, Mrs. Bunting said that Radcliffe has reasons for keeping its separate status. "One just doesn't ignore history or our legal setup--endowments are made out to us as Radcliffe College. But more than that, planning the best kind of education for women raises different problems than planning for men."
Speculating on the new diploma format, Mrs. Bunting suggested that President Pusey's signature might be placed above her own, reversing the present order. She doubted that the diplomas would be in Latin, as Radcliffe diplomas now are.
On Radcliffe finances, Mrs. Bunting said that since Radcliffe is now a part of Harvard, "I can make an appeal for funds for the women who go to Harvard." But she added: "I don't mean at all that Radcliffe should start begging Harvard for funds. Radcliffe has a responsibility to put its own house in order."
Just as the Law School and the Medical School have to "scramble for their own money" she pointed out, Radcliffe will have the responsibility to raise its own funds.
Mrs. Bunting also said yesterday that first-floor rooms in Barnard and Whitman would definitely be used next year for masters' offices and callers' rooms in South and East Houses respectively. No reconversion of deconverted doubles will be necessary in either dorm because of additional space in the recently-purchased apartment building at 124 Walker St.
The Office of the Dean of Residence reported yesterday that requests are coming in rapidly for suites in the apartment building. Many students, the office noted, submitted their applications in blocks as large as 12.
