After losing all but one of six inter-collegiate matches in the South, the varsity tennis team returned North Saturday to overwhelm Army, 9-0, at West Point.
Coach Jack Barnaby expressed satisfaction with the Crimson's play against North Carolina, Duke, Clemson, and Presbyterian College and pointed to the decisive win over Army as an indication of the team's progress. Harvard took all but the second doubles match in straight sets from the Cadets in its first Eastern Intercollegiate Conference contest.
"The team is very advanced for this stage of the season," commented Barnaby. "Most of the players, especially those who were out of pactice, showed marked improvement. Tough competition and good weather made the trip a real success."
A and B Squad
Before heading south, Barnaby split the team into two squads to play different schedules. Paul Sullivan, Vic Niederhoffer, Frank Ripley, and Gary Adelman from the first six led the "A" squad and Doug Walter and Keith Martin played one-two on the "B" squad.
The "A" team dropped two matches against North Carolina by scores of 6-3 and 8-1 as only Frank Ripley of the first four managed to win. Ripley dealt Keith Stoneman, his first defeat in 24 intercollegiate matches, 6-3 and 6-4, in the first meeting with the Tarheels April 2. John Vinton and Bob Inman, playing at five and six, also split their matches and teamed to take the lone doubles victory to account for the only other Crimson scores.
Harvard meets M.I.T. in its first home match tomorrow and Columbia travels here Saturday for an EITC contest. Both matches should be fairly easy victories.
