The Harvard-Radcliffe Combined Charities drive started strongly Monday evening, collecting $9231--a record high for opening night, and more than one third of its $27,000 goal. On last year's opening night, slightly over one quarter of the goal was collected.
Lowell House, which last year contributed $80 on the first evening, gave $946.76. Kirkland trailed its opening night total last year by 18 cents, contributing $710. Freshmen contributed $2258, slightly less than last year, but only 30 per cent of the new Yard quota. Last year's Monday evening drive collected 40 per cent of the Yardling goal.
Radcliffe receipts totalled $663.50, or 22 per cent of the quota for the 'Cliffe. This is the first year Cliffies have been included in the drive.
Despite the encouraging opening-night totals, Combined Charities organizers warned against over-confidence. "A lot of people are giving $1 or $5, when they could give at least $10," one officer said. Drive sponsors hope to collect an average of $10 per student.
BULLETIN
Harvard Combined Charities sponsors reported that receipts from last night's soliciting ran considerably below the huge amount donated on opening night. Students gave approximately $5500 dollars yesterday.
The only really disappointing returns were from the Yard, where less than half of Monday's total was collected. Treasurer James G. Taylor '65 said that tonight's efforts should decide whether the drive will reach its goal. Much depends on whether Radcliffe is able to improve on the amounts given in previous separate women's drives.
