Eliot Tops Leverett, 22-8, For House Football Crown

By Steven V. Roberts

Well done my golden warriors, my Greek gods" Master John H. Finley cheered yesterday afternoon as the Eliot House football team crushed Leverett, 22-8, to win the House Football League championship.

Eliot House, or as Master Finley calls it Arcadia, allowed only two touchdowns in winning eight straight games this season. The loss was Leverett's first in seven contents.

A bitter wind coming in of the Charles and sub-freesing temperatures made holding on to the ball an achievement in itself. Late in the first period Eliot started a drive from its own 26.

After losing five yards on first down Eliot quarterback Pete Wood rolled out on an play and made 20 yards to his own 41. At this point Wood found a soft spot in the left side of the Leverett line and played it for all it was worth. With Bill Risser and Al Friend blocking ferociously, Wood sent his powerful fullback, Keith Striggow, barreling into the line five straight times before the drive was halted by a fumble on the Leverett 13.

But the Bunnies couldn't move and Keith Julian kicked to Wood on the 45, who broke free down the right sideline and returned the ball to the 10. On the first play Striggow slammed off-tackle for the score and Eliott Tompkins converted.

Leverett's attack again stalled and Corky Cronin recovered a fumble for Eliot on Leverett's 20. Three running plays put the ball on the 11 and with four seconds left in the half Wood threw a running pass to Friess in the end zone. Tompkins again converted.

The Bunnies finally got a break in the third period when a poor Eliot kick went out on the Elephants' 20.

A pass from Buddy Lynch to Julian moved the ball to the 17. After a run gained three, Lynch went back to pass, was rushed hard, and threw in desperation to one of his blockers, Bobby Kargman. Kargman eluded several would-be tacklers and scored.

Leverett threatened again after intercepting an Eliot pass on the Elephants' 32. On a fourth down pass from the 11, Eliot's Gary Berger intercepted and returned it all the way to the Bunnies' 39.
