Tennis Varsity Beats Amherst, 8-1; Crimson Sweeps Singles Matches

The varsity tennis team swept past a weak Amherst squad yesterday, winning 8 to 1. All six Crimson players were victorious in the singles matches.

The freshman team also won, 8 to 0, with the third doubles match being called because of darkness.

In the number one match, Bob Bowditch set the pace for the singles contests with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Amherst's Jim Allen. Crimson players won all the other singles matches in straight sets, none of them very close.

Harvard's only loss was in the third doubles, where Kal Pollen and Dave Moore dropped a 6-4, 6-1 match to Peter Guest and Dick Shrager. Pollen and Moore had never played together before, since Pollen's regular doubles partner, Gary Adelman, was needed for the number two doubles match yesterday. Guest and Shrager played an all-around game, with no single tactic outstanding in their win.

In the other singles matches, Paul Sullivan defeated Jack Walter, 6-4, 6-3, the Crimson's Doug Walter defeated Tony Skolnick by 6-2 and 6-4, and Pete Smith won his match, 6-1 and 6-0. Pollen and Dave Martin added the other victories.

In the doubles, Sullivan and Bowditch won at number one over Walter and Al Lowy in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2. Adelman and Smith added the Crimson's final point with a win in the second doubles match against Allen and Peter Wheeler.

Against the Yardlings, Amherst's freshmen were not able to win a set. Frank Ripley, Bob Inman, Vic Nieder-hoffer, John Vinton, Tom James, and John Rynoos collected wins in the singles.
