Big Red Crushes Wrestlers, 28-5, As Varsity Wins Only One Match

Wrestling captain Nick Estabrook was defeated for the first time in ten matches last night as a powerful Cornell squad crushed the Crimson grapplers 28 to 5 in the I.A.B. Heavyweight Duke Hurley was the only Harvard wrestler to win, pinning his opponent in the second round.

Although the varsity "had a rough time tonight, the boys are up for the Princeton contest tomorrow", coach Pickett said after the match. "We want it bad". The wrestlers meet the Tiger squad today at 3:30 p.m. in the I.A.B. in an attempt to find revenge for the Cornell defeat.

The Crimson wrestling team's overall record after yesterday's defeat is now two wins and seven losses. After the Princeton match today, the Crimson takes on Brown and Yale to conclude its Ivy competition.

Winning its 37th straight Ivy match, the Big Red raised its record to five wins and six losses after last night's victory. Depressed by the loss, the Crimson will have a tough time today if it wants to improve its 2-7 record.

Estabrook, who has pinned five opponents this year, was behind going into the third round and needed a pin to win the match. He gambled and lost when he was reversed by Cornell's Bill Carter, who won the 137-pound class with an 11-6 decision.

George Doub at 130 pounds and Red Grant in the 191 division, two other varsity mainstays, were slightly favored to win, but both were decisioned by their Cornell opponents. Doub lost 8 to 2 to Cornell's Jim Meldrim and Grant was decisioned in a close contest by Allan Marion, 2 to 0.

Tony Woodfield, who won a 5-2 decision against Pennsylvania last week, was defeated 5 to 0 by strong Cornell wrestler Jared Barlow (123). Competing in his first match, Crimson J.C.Freienmuth von Helms met his first set-back at the hands of Big Red sophomore Peter Cummings in the 167-pound division.

The other Crimson losers in the devastating defeat were Steve Astor (147), who lost in a 9-1 decision; Bob Kolodney, who lost 9 to 0 to Cornell's Allen Rose in the 157 class; and Paul Schnitz, who was taken down at 3:00 of his match by Alex Steinbergh (177).

Cornell now has a 3-0 record in Ivy League games, second only to Columbia (4-0). Harvard is tied with Princeton (0-3) for last place behind Penn, Brown, and Yale.
