'Cliffe Athletic Association Urges Reinstatement of Mandatory P.T.

Cites 'Decline of Physical Well-Being'

Citing a "decline of general physical well-being" among 'Cliffles, the Executive Council of the Radcliffe Athletic Association urged reinstating compulsory freshman P.T. at Radcliffe.

The Council has placed the recommendation before the SGA. The council asked it to study the proposal and present its findings to the Presidents' Advisory Board for final consideration.

Radcliffe suspended required freshman P.T. this fall. Although as many girls are participating in club sports as last year, not nearly as many have come out for instruction in basic skills like ball-throwing, according to Mrs. Helen Parker, director of Radcliffe Physical Education.

After SGA had discussed this proposal, a member suggested that the group review the traditional fire drill procedure. 'Cliffles must now successfully pass eight drills during the year, following the procedure outlined on four pages of Redbook, the Radcliffe rulebook.

SGA unamiously voted to recommend that the number of required drills be reduced from eight to two each year. Many representatives favored including the stipulation that none be staged after 1 a.m. when they inconvenience "all sorts of people."

A resident of Cabot Hall recalling an incident that occurred there observed that the drills present constant danger to "life and limb." When the clarion tones of the alarm sounded, one unsuspecting 'Cliffle fell down the stairs. She was on cructhes for weeks thereafter. Another girl reacted quite differently. While shaving her legs, she cut an artery--all over the living room rug.

SGA representatives did not forget another traditional part of the fire program, the fire rope. For indeed the "highlight" of Orientation Week is the sight of "Cliffe freshmen demonstrating their ability to lower themselves down the fire ropes in the gym. All the older halls have these ropes, but they are never used.
