Swimmers Drop Army

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The varsity swimming team rolled up a 67-28 score over Army Saturday to notch their first victory in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League Army picked up only two first places all day.

Undoubtedly the best race of the meet was the 200 yard breaststroke. For the first six laps Crimson sophomore Bill chadsey held a six foot lead over Army's Steve Childers. But then the gap began to close; for the last lap the two were neck and neck until Chadsey gave an extra lunge at the finish to touch out Childers in a time of 2:24.9. Chadsey's time was nearly three seconds better than last week's and only one and one-half seconds away from 1961 captain Bill Schellstede's Harvard record.

Captain Bob Kaufmann swept both sprints, wining the 50 in 22.4 (two-tenths of a second from the pool record) and the 100 in 50.1. Teammate Dennis Hunter added a fine performance in the 50 to take second place away from Army's captain Barry Thomas and complete a Crimson sweep of the event.

In the 200 yard individual medley John Pringle and Joe State finished one-two for the varsity.

Mulligan Takes 440-Freestyle

Crimson record-holder George Mulligan swam for the first time this season and came up with a victory in his specialty, the 440 yard freestyle. His winning time of 4:54.1 was a slight disappointment even for this stage of the season.

the only big surprise of the meet came in the 220 yard freestyle, where Bill Zentgraf turned in his best performance of the season only to lose to Army sophomore Bill Landgraf. Landgraf built up a one-stroke lead which Zentgraf could not regain, to win the race in 2:10.3.
