Thomas M. Stroke, editor of the Santa Barbara (California) News Press, has received the University's Lauterbach Journalism Award of the Nieman Foundation for his intensive disclosure of the activities of the John Birch Society in Santa Barbara.

The award is given to an American newsman each year for "outstanding work in defense of civil liberties."
