Varsity Soccer Will Meet Second-Place Brown Today

By Rudolf V. Ganz jr.

A soccer varsity hobbled with injuries travels to Providence today to clash with their toughest Ivy rivals of the season. A win today will cinch the league title for the Crimson, which goes into the match with a 4-0-1 League record. Brown is clinging to second place with 4-2. If they topple the Crimson they will force the contest for the Ivy crown into the last game of the season.

With Chris Ohiri still sidelined with a badly strained muscle, and Captain Ted Wendell and Ed Klufio also out of action, Coach Bruce Munro will have to rely heavily on sophomores again this week.

Last week the Crimson was in even worse shape, but slipped and slid to a 3-2 upset over Wesleyan on a field knee-deep in mud. Meanwhile, under similar conditions in Ithaca, Cornell was rolling up a 5-2 upset over Brown, whom Harvard trounced in a 9-1 romp earlier in the season.

Scores Misleading

The comparative scores are misleading, to say the least. Brown won their match with Princeton, while the Crimson had to settle for a tie. And the Bruins will field an experenced team, including nine lettermen and two returnees from last year's 7-1 freshman squad.

In addition, the Crimson will be without the services of three or more of its regular starters. Brown is at full strength, and boasts the nearest Ivy rival to Ohiri in sophomore center forward Al Young. Young set a freshman scoring record of 25 goals last season and gives the Bruins all their scoring punch.

Munro Sees Toss-Up

"The Bruins are always tough on their home ground," Munro said, and the weather played a large part in their loss to Cornell last week. "At full strength we could take them," he predicted, "but with our injuries you just have to rate it another toss-up, I guess."

The Crimson will probably start veteran Mike Kramer at outside left, with sophomore John Thorndike in Wendell's spot at inside left and Al Chang replacing Ohiri at center forward. Seamus Malin at inside right and Sam Rodd will round out the line. Emmanuel Boye might be able to play, but last night he remained a question mark in the starting line-up.

Sophomore Bill Ward, who missed the Wesleyan game, will return to his post as center half, flanked by Tony Davies on the left and Dave Clapp on the right. Alex Cortesi and Chuck David will probably start at fullback, though Munro predicted Lou Williams will see a lot of action. John Adams will be ready to fill his usual slot in the goal.
