On a street near Dunster House early yesterday afternoon, two policemen drove up in a truck, threw two motorcycles bearing 1960 Massachusetts license plates into the back of the truck, and drove off to a local service station.
This action was part of a city-wide attempt by the Cambridge police to remove from the streets all automobiles and motorcycles bearing invalid 1960 license plates. The owners of the vehicles must pay for all towing charges and will be subject to possible fine.
Motor vehicles which do not bear the new 1961 plates are unregistered and, more important, uninsured, a spokesman for the Police Department said.
