The University has appointed a former Crimson oarsman to replace three-time Henley winner Lawrence Coolidge '53 as varsity lightweight crew coach, it was learned recently.
Rowell Chase '59, who rowed in Coolidge's first championship eight, will take over in mid-November, when he completes his tour of duty with the Coast Guard. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Chase rowed two years in the varsity boat.
Coolidge announced his retirement last spring after three years in which he had captured the Thames Cup three times, and had amassed 33 victories without a defeat. He is now at the Business School.
A new freshman heavyweight coach has also been named. He is Harry L. Parker, former Olympic oarsman and U.S. single sculls champion.
