Moving one step further toward the Intercollegiate title, the squash team won all nine games Tuesday against a strong Williams squad. Far more dangerous than their 9-0 defeat indicated, the Ephs lept to early leads in four of the six individual matches before falling to superb Crimson comebacks.
Described by coach Jack Barnaby as "one of the best teams we'll play all year," Williams is ranked on a par with the defending Intercollegiate champion, Navy. Having defeated both these powers, the Crimson has yet to face only two serious title contenders, Yale and Princeton. Both matches will be in February.
Playing number one, captain Gerry Emmet was forced to produce a barrage of expert shots in order to overcome an opening 2-1 score. Second-ranked Tim Gallwey was another victim of the early Eph surge, although he lost the important third game by only one point.
Romer Holleran and Fred Vinton, the Crimson's third and fourth men, both won their matches in consecutive games; but the next two men on the ladder, Tony Lake and Jorge Lemann, both needed five contests. Lemann was even behind 2 to 0 at one point.
The remaining Crimson players--Pete Smith, Doug Poole, and Alden Briggs--won their matches 3 to 0, 3 to 0, and 3 to 1. Playing unofficially at number ten, Crimson alternate Ed Vaughn lost the only match of the day, 1 to 3.
Noting the victory's significance, Barnaby observed last night that Williams might beat Yale. He pointed out that the Ephs' strength was no surprise to the Crimson players, who had driven to Williamstown the night before in order to lessen the disadvantages of playing on away courts.
