M.I.T. may have its best tennis team in years, but it was scarcely a match for coach Jack Barnaby's Crimson varsity yesterday. Led by a fine upset victory by captain Ned Weld at number one singles, the varsity swamped the Engineers, 9 to 0, at the Soldiers Field courts.
Weld playing the top position for the first time this year, came from behind to beat Cuban Davis Cupper Raul Karman, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Karman, whose beautiful crosscourt backhand returns gave Weld a lot of trouble in the opening games, let up just a bit after winning the first set, and that was all the Crimson captain needed. The Tech star was unable to regain his touch, while Weld, who had started slowly grew stronger and stronger. In the final set, he broke Karman's service at love in the sixth game to lead by 4-2, and when Karman pulled up to 5-4, Weld broke service again to win the match.
At second singles, Bob Bowditch outlasted M.I.T.'s Jack Klapper, 6-2, 7-5, in a battle of southpaw sophomores, while Tim Gallwey, at number three, beat Tech captain Jeff Winicour, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. The varsity swept the remaining singles in routine fashion, with Fred Vinton defeating Bob Kennefich, 6-3, 6-3, Jorge Lemann whipping Bob Hodges, 6-2, 6-4, and Bill Wood routing Ravi Sikri, 6-2, 6-0.
Weld and Bowditch spotted Karman and Klapper a set in the first doubles match and then bounced back to win, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Barnaby rested his second and third doubles teams of Gallwey-Vinton and Lemann-Wood. Laurie Pratt and Jim Cameron, playing number two, came through to beat Winicour and Kennefich, 7-9, 6-1, 6-3, and Scott Custer and Langden Smith, playing third, wrapped up the shutout by taking Hodges and Dave Aker, 7-5, 6-1.
