Swimmers Lose To Yale, 60-26, In League Meet

In a spirit of sentimentality, Yale's varsity swimming team disposed of the Crimson, Saturday, in quick order, 60 to 26. This victory gave the Elis the League title and extended their string of consecutive dual meets to 182.

But the meet was entirely anticlimactic compared with the deeply moving half-time ceremony in which both retiring coaches--the Crimson's Hal Ulen and the Elis' Bob Kiphuth--exchanged silver trophies and words of praise.

At the same time, the Crimson Freshman team's sensational defeat of the Yale Freshmen, 50 to 36, was encouraging and significant.

During the ceremonies between the two meets, Kiphuth remarked in speaking of the Yardling victory that "what happened a few minutes ago wasn't exactly fitting, but if we have to lose, it's great to lose to Harvard."

In the varsity meet, Yale had no particular difficulty winning every event except the dive and the final relay (where they were disqualified). The giants from New Haven set two new pool records and always looked impressive, particularly in the medley relay.

The varsity's Eric Johnson took the dive by 0.43 points over Dennis Berk, for the only real Crimson win. In the 200-yard backstroke, the varsity's Gary Pildner swam his fastest time of the year, 2:17.8, keeping neck and neck with both Jim Dolbey and Ed Alexander until the last lap, when the two Elis pulled ahead.

In the sprints, Bruce Hunter struggled in vain for the win, but came a close second in both races. The varsity was hampered by the absence of captain John Hammond, who was unable to compete.

The Crimson Freshmen displayed an awesome show of power in the opening and closing relays, which were the keys in the meet. In the first leg of the medley, captain Bob Kaufmann set a national intercollegiate freshman mark of 57.8 for the 100-yd. backstroke. The relay team of Kaufmann, Bill Zentgraf, Fred Elizalde, and Norris Eisenbrey set a new Freshman record of 3:58.0. Later, Kaufmann broke the University 200-yd. backstroke mark, swimming a 2:13.3.
