WHRB Will Boost Power, Move on FM Dial to 95.3

WHRB will change its FM broadcasting frequency to 95.3 on the dial, John H. Shenefield '60, president of the station, announced last night.

Currently operating higher up the dial at 107.1 megacycles, the station will accomplish the changeover before the end of the month, according to Shenefield. At the same time, WHRB will also boost its power and increase the height of its antenna on top of Dudley Hall by 20 feet.

With the expiration of a 30-day trial period yesterday, the station, after more than a year's effort, gained final FCC approval to switch its channel. Assigned to channel 296 since it began FM broadcasting in 1957, the station has been seeking to escape from interference caused by WBZ on a nearby channel.

The station's attempt, however, to move to channel 289 involved it in a conflict with WKOX of Framingham, seeking an adjoining channel, and forced WHRB into prolonged hearings before the Communications Commission in Washington. As a result the station decided in December to apply for channel 237 instead. Approval was granted by the FCC February 5 subject to the protest period.

"The new frequency will be hemmed in closely," Shenefield remarked, "and there will still be interference in some areas but it will be better than the present situation."
