A $2 million motel will soon replace the Radcliffe Dormitory at 1653 Massachusetts Avenue. Demolition of the present building is scheduled to begin immediately after Commencement.
Radcliffe Business Manager Stewart Stearns admited that plans for the motel had taken him somewhat by surprise. "We never owned the building," he added, "and have leased it for use as a dormitory only during the last two years."
The College had not applied for a lease on the property to cover next year, he explained, because officials weren't sure that it would be needed. The dormitory houses about 20 students.
Stearns refused to comment on whether the College plans eventually to dispose of its three other dormitories on Massachusetts Avenue. "We were glad to have that space when we needed it," he said.
However, he added that the College would like to drop its other Massachusetts Avenue leases if better space were available. One administration source affirmed that Radcliffe would like to have all the dormitories together.
Imogene Fish, associate dean of residence, promised that girls who are forced to move because of the building's demolition will be given special consideration in the assigning of rooms for next year.
