Yardling Hockey Defeats Northeastern Team, 10-1

The once-beaten Freshman hockey team swamped a weak Northeastern squad yesterday, 10 to 1 at Watson Rink. With six games left to play the team has a 12-1 record.

At no time was there any question about the outcome of this afternoon's romp. The Yardlings tallied three times in the first period, five times in the second, and twice in the third. McGrath scored the lone Huskie goal in the second period.

Jim Dwinell emerged as top scorer, with four goals, followed by Chris Norris who tallied twice. Dean Alpine, Tom Heintzman, Bruce Thomas, and Mike Grannis each scored once. Manager Dave Slattery called the game a "runaway" but warned that tomorrow's contest with Andover will be stiffer.

First line left wing Bill Beckett attributed the lopsided score to the fact that the Huskies "did not skate very well." He said they were unable to handle the puck or control it in their territory.

Beckett noted that the Northeastern players occasionally became rattled, further hampering their play. In addition, the large Watson playing area made possible a sweeping attack which might not be possible at another rink. However, periods in the game were cut to 15 minutes instead of the usual 20 for college matches.

Colby Biggest Threat

Beckett asserted that prospects for the rest of the season "look very good." He called the Colby game on Feb. 23, the biggest threat in the future. "Colby is a bigger team," Beckett said, "and playing them away, we should have a great deal of trouble."

Today the team will travel to Andover for a game with Andover School. Neither Beckett nor Slattery anticipated too much trouble but felt that the contest will be considerably stiffer than yesterday's.

Freshman Basketball

The Freshman basketball team will be hampered in its match at Dartmouth tomorrow by the probable sidelining of captain Bill Danner. Danner appeared at practice today but still limped badly from a spained ankle, and Coach Bruce Munro said it is unlikely he will play. Danner is the floor leader and top rebounder for the team.

Marc Kolden will take over Danner's position at center, and guard Tom Tangeman will replace Kolden at forward. Tim Martin will be moved up from the bench to fill Tangeman's slot.

The other regular forward, Gary Borchard, and guard Joe Deering will also start. Borchard is the team's top scorer with an average of 21.6 points per game.
