Varsity Five to Play Here Against Cornell, Columbia

By Walter L. Goldfrank

The varsity five will run into stiff copposition at 8:30 p.m. tonight when it encounters powerful Cornell at the I.A.B. Tomorrow night's home opponent, however, is the considerably less potent Columbia team.

The Big Red have posted a 5-3 record thus far, including a league win over the hapless Lions on Monday, 68 to 52. They have a tall, talented squad that could prove to be, with the possible exception of Princeton, the only threat to Dartmouth's superiority.

Led by Captain Lou Jordan, who is the leading scorer and playmaker, Cornell has not yet jelled its attack plan, but has already shown signs of coming around.

Along with Jordan and Farley, coach Royner Greene will probably start Dave Zornow (6 ft., 5 in.) and Jay Harris (6 ft., 3 in.) at forward, and Bill Sullivan at the other guard position.

Columbia, on the other hand, has dropped its last eight in a row, after winning its opening contest. The Lions have nothing much beyond their young coach, Archie Oldham, who probably wishes that Chet Forte and Ted Dwyer were still around.

At forward, Oldham will most likely use veteran Richie Rodin and sophomore Edvin Auzenbergs. Captain Phil Matthews will be at center, with Murray Melton and Hal Kaplan at guard. Columbia has little depth, except for inexperienced sophomores and juniors.

Thus the Crimson, which has lost its last two games in overtime, should be able to at least split the week-end contests, and if the varsity plays up to the potential it has shown only in brief spots so far, an upset over Cornell is not out of the question.
