The Crimson baseball team, already established as champions of the Eastern Intercollegiate League, will be attempting to notch its fifth straight victory over Yale when it meets the Elis at Soldiers Field this afternoon at 3 p.m.
Pre-game ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m. with the parade of Alumni and Seniors to the field.
Lefthander Gerry Emmet will probably start on the mound for the varsity. The tall sophomore gained credit for the win in the Crimson's 12-7 victory over the Bulldogs earlier this season, when he relieved starter Dave Brigham in the third inning and stayed in to pitch the rest of the game.
Finishing fifth in the league standings this spring after taking the championship last season, the Yale team has been plagued by weak pitching--a handicap which must come as quite a shock to coach Ethan Allen after his recent successes with Ken MacKenzie and Ray Carlsen. Diminutive southpaw Pete Higuchi, who lasted only one inning against the Crimson last month, may get the starting call again today.
The Crimson varsity, which finished its regular season undefeated by Ivy opponents, has won two games in the last week to raise its overall record to 13 wins, 7 losses, and one tie.
A week ago the team edged Amherst, 5 to 4, on a tie-breaking unearned run in the seventh inning. Emmet pitched five innings of scoreless ball until the sixth, when he was relieved by Brigham. Byron Johnson came in an inning later after Brigham had given up four runs to tie the score. Then, in the Crimson seventh, Mo Balboni reached second on an error by left fielder Tom Gorman and scored when the pitcher threw the ball into center field on a pick-off attempt.
The Crimson also beat Williams at Williamstown Saturday.
