None of the six Crimson golfers who went to New Haven this weekend was able to shoot the qualifying score of 158 in the preliminary 36-hole round of the Eastern Intercollegiate golf tournament.
Captain Warren Iliff, who shot 78 on Friday morning, went out with 38 in the afternoon, but ran into trouble on the last nine and ended the round with a score of 165. The other varsity scores were: Alan Steinert, 166; Perry Driggs, 165; Bob Grundeman, 172; Frank Dodge, 171; and Bob David, 183.
Two golfers from Penn State, one from Yale, and one from Boston College advanced to the semi-finals in match play yesterday. B.C.'s Charlie Volpone, who has been giving the Crimson a lot of trouble for the past few years, will face Ted Weiss of Yale today in the first semi-final match.
Bill Davidson and John Felus, both from Penn State, will meet in the other semi-final this morning, and the finals will be played on the 6,628-yard course in the afternoon.
Volpone defeated Wendell Long of Princeton, 2 and 1, in his first round match on Sunday, and went on to eliminate another Princeton golfer, Charles Dudley, 3 and 1. Davidson defeated both of his opponents by 2 and 1 scores. Felus won his matches, 3 and 2, and 1 up on the 19th hole.
