Wesleyan Squad Tops Golf Team

Wesleyan College defeated the Crimson golf team yesterday, 4 to 3. The match was played at the Edgewood Country Club in Cromwell, Conn., and a good part of the varsity's defeat was due to their lack of familiarity with the course. Wesleyan won three strokes on Crimson blind shots, although all of the Harvard golfers shot 80 or under.

Playing number one, Perry Driggs lost an exciting match, two up. His Wesleyan opponent, a long hitter, was never more than one up on Driggs, and won on the seventeenth hole.

Dave Beady won, one up, and number three man Bob Grundeman lost, 3-2. Bob Rose defeated his Wesleyan opponent, 5-4. Playing number five, sophomore Watt Tyler dropped his match, 3-2. Bob Davis won, one up, and bottom man North Wood lost his first varsity match of the season, 5-4.

The Crimson was also handicapped by the absence of the senior golfers who are taking generals this week. Frank Dodge, Allan Steinert, and captain Warren Iliff did not play. Except for their number four man, the Wesleyan team played as well as had been expected. With only one exception, all the Wesleyan scored in the seventies.

The next Crimson match will be played against Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania, on Saturday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City.
