Track Squad to Encounter B.U. In Season's First Meet Tonight

Two IC4A track champions and one of the world's most promising high jumpers will be among the participants tonight in the first track meet of the winter season. The Crimson will face a strong B.U. aggregation in Briggs Cage, with running events scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m.

IC4A king John Lawlor of B.U. and his teammate Eino Keerd figure to dominate the 35-lb. weight event, varsity coach Bill McCurday said last night. McCurdy thinks that chances are particularly dim, since Jim Doty, the Crimson's best weight man, is still out with a broken foot sustained over a month ago. Keerd and B.U.'s Larry Cafarella, both of whom have thrown 54 feet in competition, should sweep the shotput with little opposition.

Joel Landau, the 1958 intercollegiate high and low hurdle champion, should have little trouble taking first in his specialty, to be run over the 40-yard indoor course. Crimson broad jumpers and pole vaulters are expected to triumph, and Dyke Benjamin in the distances, Art Cahn in the 1000-yard run, and John deKiewiet in the high jump are also definite favorites, McCurdy said.

B.U.'s Henry Dionisio should give the Crimson trouble in the middle distance races, McCurdy predicted, and Donald Silpe may prove too strong for Sandy Dodge in the dash. Terrier miler Bob Wells and high jumper Neil Morgan will allow the favored Crimson trackmen little margin for error, and Arthur Reed could give Landau a tough time in the hurdle event.

"It looks as though we're favored to win," McCurdy observed, "since our advantage in depth is so great." He emphasized, however, that this year's B.U. team "has some really top-flight performers."

The main feature of the freshman meet, which is rated a toss-up, will be the appearance of the sensational John Thomas, who high jumped 6 ft., 10 in.
