The varsity hockey team's third period rush fell short last Saturday as a strong St. Lawrence team held on to win, 4 to 3. Down 4-1 with 11 minutes to go in the game, Crimson sophomores Crocker Snow and Bob Anderson each scored once to bring the varsity within striking range.
The loss events the Crimson's season record at 2-2-2 and solidifies the Larries' claim as the best collegiate hockey team in the East. Dick Fischer scored the other Crimson goal while Tom Laller had two goals for St. Lawrence and Bill McKillip and John Dalbec each had one.
Saturday's game followed somewhat the same pattern as have the Crimson's last three contests: the varsity was slightly outplayed in the first period, held its own in the second, let down in the beginning of the third, and then came on hard at the end of the game. Harry Pratt played his second straight good game, turning away 34 shots.
After Snow's goal at 9:16 of the final period, the varsity pressed the attack, but could not score until the last minute of play. At this point, Crimson defenseman Bob Anderson skated in with the puck for a screen shot, and when he met no opposition from the St. Lawrence defense, he moved all the way in and scored.
The Larry defensemen protested vigorously that the referee had blown the whistle before the goal, prompting them to let Anderson skate in. When their protest was disallowed, they continued the argument and were put off the ice with misconduct penalties. The varsity had only 37 seconds to press its advantage.
