The University has purchased the house where former President Charles W. Eliot lived as assistant professor in Mathematics and Chemistry, Henry H. Cutler '29, manager for Taxes, Insurance, and Real Estate disclosed yesterday. Rooms will be used for academic offices, he noted.
Negotiations were begun by the former owners of the house, Cutler said, commenting that "It is a little outside the area the University had expected to buy in." The building is located on Kirkland St., between New Lecture Hall and Beacon St. and the University-owned Holden Green apartments.
The house occupies a plot of land "quite a bit larger than most lots in Cambridge," according to Cutler. However, he added that there are no immediate plans for building.
Eliot designed the house in 1856 as a double home, to be occupied by his parents and three unmarried sisters. After his marriage, Eliot moved into the easterly half and lived there until his wife's death in 1866.
