Leverett, Quincy Name Coaches Yovicsin, Lamar to House Staffs

John M. Yovicsin, coach of Football, recently accepted an invitation to join Leverett's Senior Common Room, John J. Conway, Master of Leverett House, announced yesterday.

In another move to include College athletic officials in the academic life of the Houses, the Corporation approved the appointment of Henry N. Lamar, coach of Freshman Football, as a Senior Associate of Quincy House, said John M. Bullitt '43, Master of Quincy House.

"The Leverett Senior Common Room discussed the problem of integrating coaches into House life, and we decided it would add balance to our staff to include coach Yovicsin," said Conway. "I then persuaded Yovicsin it would be a good idea."

As a member of Leverett's Senior Common Room, Yovicsin will participate in its regular meetings. The coach holds a University appointment.

Lamar Joins Quincy Staff

Quincy House also will have a football coach, Henry Lamar, on its staff of Senior Associates. "Harvard recognizes athletics as an integral part of the educational process, not as a separate activity," said Master Bullitt.

Appointing coaches to Senior Common Rooms has a notable precedent in Adolph W. Samborski, Director of Intramural Athletics and Freshman Baseball Coach, who has been an Associate of Dudley House for 25 years.

The new Master of Dudley House, Dean Leighton, praised Samborski yesterday, saying, he "has played an active part in the Dudley Senior Common Room for many years."

"The Deans have been concerned for a long time with this problem of integrating the coaches and the Houses," Leighton stated. The Masters have considered the matter as a group, he said, but that any specific action taken now will represent an individual response to the challenge.
