In what may prove to be the Crimson's toughest game of the year, the varsity soccer team will meet a powerful Cornell squad this afternoon at Ithaca. The Big Red, pre-season favorites to lead the Ivy League this year, rate as slight favorites in today's game.
Varsity coach Bruce Munro at last has his entire squad at his disposal, as all the injured have temporarily recovered. However, he is only permitted, by Ivy League game rules, to carry 16 men on the roster for today's game. This will deprive him of some of the new-found depth the Crimson demonstrated against Tufts on Thursday.
Scoring Punch Important
The most important single factor this afternoon should be whether the varsity can again demonstrate the scoring punch with which they destroyed the Jumbos in scoring six times. These goals, however, were scored against a team with a considerably more porous defense than that of Cornell. Last year's game with the Big Red ended in a 0-0 tie.
With the return to action of John Hedreen and John Mudd, Munro now has his top seven forwards ready for play. As in past years, more than one of these men can play any position in the forward line. This gives the Crimson five comparatively fresh linemen in the game at all times and affords Munro ample opportunity to experiment for his best combination.
Wings Strong
John McIntosh, Larry Ekpebu, and Kay Khan will man the wings, and judging by early season practice and performance, this should be one of the varsity's strongest points. All three men are fast, have good shots, and have shown the ability to outwit and outrun opposing backs.
In the center of the line, Munro has four insides to alternate: Mudd, Hedreen, Al Butzel, and Keith Lowe. The first two, lettermen from last year, will probably start this afternoon, but Buzel and Lowe are more than adequate replacements. Senior Roger Tuckerman will start at center forward, where he scored two goals and two assists against the Jumbos.
The halfback line seems set with junior Bill Rapp starting at center half, while Charlie Steele and Marsh McCall will open on the wings. Bill Driver, who looked very well on Thursday, will also see extensive service. Captain Floyd Moloy and Lanny Keyes will start at fullbacks, and Tom Bagnoli in goal.
