"Things have been done by the Democratic Congress, but not the way we wanted them done," Senator Leverett Saltonstall told the joint gathering of undergraduate and graduate Young Republican Clubs at Harkness Commons last night. "If you have a President and an Administration in whom you have confidence," he stated, "then you should elect a Republican Congress."
The Senator from Massachusetts listed the major achievements of the Administration as "keeping the peace, and providing a healthy economy." He cited the cease-fire in Korea and the Defense Reorganization Bill as Eisenhower achievements and noted that the Reciprocal Trade Bill "has been passed, surprisingly enough, for three years."
Saltonstall explained Republican foreign policy as "a working out of the principles of resisting armed aggression, and keeping our word to friendly nations." On Taiwan, he explained, the Administration must cope with "Chiang's stubborn determination" to return to the mainland and the fact that "we have already recognized one government of China, and cannot recognize another."
Endorses Foreign Aid
In other foreign policy issues, the Senator endorsed foreign aid as "keeping countries like India turned out way." He praised Eisenhower's Middle East policy for having "resisted armed aggression" by both the Arabs and the French and British.
As domestic policy achievements of the Administration, he listed "the largest tax-cut ever; the end of wage, rent, and price controls; and a balanced budget in two years out of five."
Asked about Sherman Adams, Salton-still affirmed Adams' "basic honesty" and added, smiling, "He never did anything for me that he shouldn't have." "You will notice there is no mention of integrity in government in this year's platform," said the Senator.
