Bulldogs Favored to Beat Unbeaten Varsity Harriers

It is something of a tradition that the cross-country team should go into its triangular meet with Princeton and Yale a proven underdog, and then emerge victorious. This year's forecast, at least, is no exception, since the Bulldogs have sustained the squad depth that has made them an annual threat to the Crimson's hopes for an undefeated season.

Dyke Benjamin's sheer ability to "win races" should give the Crimson an initial advantage. And Jed Fitzgerald, who has been pressing Benjamin to faster and faster times, is predicted to be close behind.

But the harriers' toughest task will be to break up a knot of five Yale runners whose previous times rate them faster than anyone except Benjamin and Fitzgerald. "We're just going to have to put out more," says Assistant Coach Ed Stowell.

Tight Yale Squad

Indicative of the tightness of the Yale group is the fact that the team captain, Friedman, has run as far back as fifth in previous races. Teammates Bachrach, Tom Carroll (freshman 880 record holder), Kathcart, and Morrison will spearhead the Bulldog attack. Princeton does not promise much trouble for either squad.

Ed Martin, Jim Schlaeppi, and Willie Thompson will make or break the race, according to Stowell. "Martin's as ready as he has ever been," said Stowell. "Schlaeppi has been bothered by foot trouble, but we're counting on him and on Thompson. And Mac Brown could easily upset the applecart."

Crimson, Yale Unbeaten

Both Harvard and Yale are undefeated this season and the Crimson holds the Big Three Championship from last year. Should the harriers win, it would be their fourteenth consecutive win in dual or triangular competition and their fifth Big Three crown in seven tries.

The freshmen are given a better than even chance to take their race tomorrow. Freshman ace Mark Mullin is ready to run, although Knapp is a question-mark.
