Council Will Allocate Part of Fund Drive To Assist Band

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Student Council voted last night after two hours of debate to place the Harvard Band on the recommended list of the Combined Charities Drive.

Speaking for his motion to make the Band one of the five recommended charities, Lionel B. Spiro '60 noted that the organization had suffered "quite a big loss" in the recent fire which destroyed part of the Band's music. The Band, he said, is not able to conduct a drive to raise the money to offset its loss, due to a possible conflict with the Program for Harvard College.

Spiro observed that "a move of this sort would get the support of the Council from each Band member." Denis D. Barber '60 commented that "politically, it's an opportunity the Council should not turn down."

Peter J. Solomon '60, Chairman of the Combined Charities Drive, said he hoped that there would be no political issues involved in the drive. The five recommended charities, he said, were chosen as "representative of the community."
