B.U. Students Fall to Appreciate Quality of University's Snow Job

"We shovel all the walks in front of our own property," said Cecil Roberts, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, in response to student charges that many streets fronting University property had been left untended during the recent snowstorm.

Roberts explained that the policy of Buildings and Grounds is to start clearing the walks as soon as the snow begins to fall. The Department uses mechanical units for shoveling rented from Sullivan & Co., an earth moving concern.

Daniel Gow, foreman of maintenance, said that he employed a crew of 12 to 16 men on the snow removal detail. The University is broken up into sections and each man services one section. Operation headquarters are at the Maintenance Building, where Mr. Gow regulates the number and positioning of his men.

According to Gow, the crew's major problem is the large number of student cars abandoned in crucial traffic areas at the beginning of a storm. Operations frequently must be suspended until the owners are notified and can move their cars.

Gow said that in the recent snowfall 30 tons of sand had been thrown down in an around the clock operation. Last week's snowfall kept maintainance men busy clearing walks the entire weekend.
