Monro Thwarts Attempt to Rob Office Employee

Two Negroes, who resembled college students failed in an armed robery attempt last night in the Financial Aid Office. The attack which occurred at 11:15 p.m., was apparently an attempt to steal the wallet of Byron Stookey, Jr. '57, an assistant in the office.

David Campbell '61 was knocked to the ground as he tackled one of the thugs as they fled from Weld Hall. The bandit got up, however, and escaped with his accomplice through the northeast Yard gate.

Stookey related that he was working late in the office when the two Negroes knocked at his door. They asked information about someone in the building, and Stookey turned his back to look up the data. As he turned around, one of the Negroes brandished a gun and the other started to search him for money.

At this point, John U. Munro '34, director of Financial Aid, reopened the office door and confronted the robers. Both brushed past him and out the back door into the Yard,

His cries for help alerted Campbell, who tried to intercept the flight of the criminals. An alarm was subsequently turned in to Cambridge and University police.

Munro described the men as being of medium height, about 20 to 25 years old, who looked not unlike college students.
